Madeira, whilst tourist destination par excellence, could not miss out on celebrating the World Tourism Day, held on September,27th, which this year, is dedicated to the topic “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism”.

In commemoration of this important occasion, a few social and cultural activities and animation initiatives have been planned in the city centre of Funchal.Tourists will be greeted with gifts upon their arrival at Madeira’s International Airport, at the International Maritime Passanger terminal of the Port of Funchal and also in some official tourist offices.

IX Colombo’s Golf Trophy Tournament

On 18 and 19 September 2026, Porto Santo Golfe will welcome the 9th edition of the “Colombo’s Golf Trophy” Tournament, a prestigious event included in the official programme of the Colombo Festival, held on the enchanting island of Porto Santo.

Set against the island’s breathtaking natural landscape and played on an exceptional golf course designed by the legendary Severiano Ballesteros, this competition offers an unforgettable experience for golf enthusiasts from around the world.

Bringing together national and international players, the tournament celebrates sporting excellence, camaraderie and the unique opportunity to discover one of the Atlantic’s most remarkable golf destinations. The competition will be played in the Stroke Play and Stableford Net formats.

By bringing together sport, tourism and the promotion of Porto Santo’s natural and cultural heritage, this event further strengthens the island’s position as a premier golf destination.

Concert “Talk to Me About Music” – Duo Bandonica

ABM Madeira presents the concert “Fala-me de Música” – Duo Bandonica, as part of the 2026 season, featuring a series of performances across various municipalities of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The project brings together mandolinist Francisca Abreu and accordionist Alessio Ferrari, offering the audience a borderless musical journey, where mandolin and accordion engage in a dialogue across different cultures, eras, and traditions.

A unique opportunity to enjoy a concert combining instrumental dialogue, emotion, and shared experience, promoting cultural accessibility throughout the region.

New Year’s Eve Show

The New Year’s fireworks show, lasting about eight minutes, is launched from across 58 fireworks stations located in Funchal’s amphitheater (26 stations), Cais 8 and Praia Almirante Reis (25 stations), at sea (5 stations) and Porto Santo Island (2 stations).

This majestic display of light and color, with modern pyrotechnic designs, will present effects never seen before for New Year’s in the region. In 2006, the show was internationally recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as “The Largest Fireworks Display in the World.”

Vila Baleira

Vila Baleira is the capital and only city on the island of Porto Santo, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in Portugal.
The island has only this village, and administratively it has a single municipality and a single parish that also include the islets of Baixo, Cima, Ferro and Fonte de Areia.
The city is one of the few municipalities with a different name from the municipality itself. Vila Baleira was elevated to the category of city on August 7, 1996 and has a population of 5 483 inhabitants (2011).

Columbus festival it’s just one of the many good reasons that will make you visit the so called “Golden Island”.

With a totally diﬀerent landscape, Porto Santo is known for having one of the most beautiful beaches in the country with its crystal clear waters and therapeutical golden sand.

Columbus festival recalls the Age of discoveries and attracts hundreds of visitors to Porto Santo. It begins with Columbus’ arrival on the island in the XV century recreating the atmosphere of that time.

This festival, created by the teachers and students of the local schools, entails drama scenes, acrobatics shows, juggling and constant animation in the streets of the village, following the dress code of the time.

It is like travelling back in history!

Carnival

Carnival is the frst big event in Madeira’s event calendar.
In all counties of the archipelago there are small parades and themed parties where everyone wears a carnival costume.

This event starts on Wednesday, before the “Entrudo” (Shrove or Fat Tuesday as it is known) and the fun goes on until the “Enterro do Osso” that takes place on the Saturday after Carnival day.
The biggest event of Carnival Season in Madeira happens on Saturday evening (Carnival Weekend) with the main parade in the streets of Funchal.

Numerous Samba groups parade in magnificent and colourful dance costumes. This is a real show of light, colour and music, that thousands join in to watch.

On Tuesday afternoon, you can also enjoy another parade, known as “Cortejo Trapalhão”, where comedy and satire are the main ingredients and anyone is free to join. Just make sure to wear a good disguise!
