Apple Festival

The annual rural event, the Apple Festival, takes place from the 19th to the 20th of September.
Organised by the Ponta do Pargo Community Centre, this festival usually gathers many agriculturists from various neighbouring locations.

The producers gather in the parish of Ponta do Pargo and transform the production and harvesting of the apple into a very lively and well-known festival.

This celebration also has a full and vibrant music line-up which includes folk groups, regional bands and even renowned national artists.

Childbirth Masses (Missas do Parto)

From the second half of December until Christmas eve, Madeirans get up at the crack of dawn to participate in the masses honoring Our Lady.

After mass, in the church square, people share sandwiches of “carne de vinha d’alhos” (pork in wine and garlic), homemade liquors, songs and joy of the Christmas spirit. This is surely one of the best ways to get to know Madeirans’ Christmas spirit.

TransMadeira

This Enduro race combines an adventure in Madeira with the best of Mountain Biking!!
In the “Bike Camp Experience” the athletes will camp, every day, in places of spectacular beauty.
At TransMadeira, the objective is to cover about 200 km of trails, with various types of terrain, in the shortest time possible.
It will take place from 18th to 23rd May and from 28th September to 3rd October 2026, in two unprecedented editions, and will cover the island from Machico (East) to Calheta (West).

Carnival

Carnival is the frst big event in Madeira’s event calendar.
In all counties of the archipelago there are small parades and themed parties where everyone wears a carnival costume.

This event starts on Wednesday, before the “Entrudo” (Shrove or Fat Tuesday as it is known) and the fun goes on until the “Enterro do Osso” that takes place on the Saturday after Carnival day.
The biggest event of Carnival Season in Madeira happens on Saturday evening (Carnival Weekend) with the main parade in the streets of Funchal.

Numerous Samba groups parade in magnificent and colourful dance costumes. This is a real show of light, colour and music, that thousands join in to watch.

On Tuesday afternoon, you can also enjoy another parade, known as “Cortejo Trapalhão”, where comedy and satire are the main ingredients and anyone is free to join. Just make sure to wear a good disguise!
