The Madeira Wine Festival pays tribute to this precious nectar, keeping alive the memory of centuries old traditions and habits related to wine production in the region.
The central promenade of Avenida Arriaga is filled with activities and decorations alluding to the theme of wine-making, including casks, barrels, grape-picking baskets and live re-enactments with people dressed in traditional costumes for the occasion. The ancient art of wine-making is recreated, including treading the grapes and other activities that help us appreciate the imagination that goes into wine-making.
In the decorated stalls that have been set up, you can sample some typical products of the region. There is plenty of music, with bands and folklore groups livening up the city with their performances.
Don’t forget to try the local wines during the many samplings and tastings held this week, and take time to enjoy the exhibition of regional handicrafts.
