The first edition of the Festival of Biosphere Reserves in Portugal takes place from the 21st of April to the 7th of May. This event aims to divulge the 12 Portuguese biosphere reserves. . This restricted number includes the municipality of Santana, in Madeira, which, since 2011, has been certified by UNESCO with this important award. The Festival of Biosphere Reserves in Portugal thus aims to highlight the importance and biodiversity of the national natural heritage, adding value and scientific knowledge to the Portuguese territories classified by UNESCO, therefore promoting a diverse traditional and contemporary programme of events and activities.
Hence, over the first days of this festival, the Santana Biosphere Reserve hosts the opening of the Agricultural Fair, the exhibition: “Geodiversity in the Reserve”, the Seminar “Biosphere Reserve, Challenges and Potentialities” and a film session “Cartas de Fora” , by Luís Miguel Jardim.
