This year, there is a double reason to celebrate, because we are celebrating both Labour Day and Mother’s Day. After two years without celebrations due to the pandemic, celebrations are back and mark the two dates simultaneously.
At 10 a.m., there will be a Tribute to Working Mothers at Cais 8, Praça do Povo, consisting of a dance class for mothers and children, followed by several traditional games, such as spinning top, handkerchief, spinning wheel, skipping rope, in a moment that is intended to be convivial and fun, symbolizing a tribute to all mothers.
At noon, the Monument to the Madeiran Worker, located at Avenida Sá Carneiro, becomes the stage for the traditional flower-laying ceremony – a tribute to Madeiran workers. There will be a musical moment by young Madeiran artist Júlia Ochôa, who will sing the regional anthem.
Throughout the day, several activities promoted by sports associations will take place, among which the 1st of May Grand Prix of the R.A.M. Athletics Association, in Ribeira Brava, the 1st Race of the 2022 Madeira Motocross Regional Championship, at the Carreiras Track, Camacha, and the ‘Professor Eleutério d’Aguiar’ Football Tournament – 2022 Edition – commemorating the 97th anniversary of Clube Desportivo 1º de Maio .
As usual, and since, after 2 years of interruption of the regular format of the celebrations due to the pandemic, this year the regular format will be resumed, and the Montado do Pereiro leisure area will be available to the population, with a picnic area.
Another highlight of the celebrations is the Labour Day commemorative concert, scheduled for 8 p.m. at Cais 8, Praça do Povo, with a performance by Madeiran artist Vânia Fernandes and the Madeiran Mandolin Orchestra.

09h30 a.m.: Athletics Event ‘Madeira a Correr – Grande Prémio 1º de Maio’ – departure next to the church, ER 104.
10h00 a.m.: Mothers and children dance class, by the Regional Community Centre + Traditional Games – Cais 8, Praça do Povo.
12h00 a.m.: Laying of flowers at the Monument to the Madeiran Worker – Avenida Sá Carneiro.
01h00 p.m.: 2022 Professor Eleutério d’Aguiar Football Tournament, commemorating the 97th anniversary of CD 1º de Maio.
05h00 p.m.: 1st race of the 2022 Madeira Regional Motocross Championship – Carreiras Motocross Track, Camacha.
10h00 a.m. to 06h00 p.m.: Opening of the Montado do Pereiro Leisure Area, with the usual food and drink stalls.
08h00 p.m.: Commemorative concert with Vânia Fernandes and the Madeiran Mandolin Orchestra – Cais 8, Praça do Povo.
