Every year, in the bay of Machico, the city switches off all its lights leaving the candle and torches light guiding the religious procession along its streets.
The legend tells the story of the image of the Lord of the Miracles that was lost in a landslide in 1803. Found at the sea and returned to the chapel of origin, it was considered a miracle which is still highly respected today.
