Childbirth Masses (Missas do Parto)

From the second half of December until Christmas eve, Madeirans get up at the crack of dawn to participate in the masses honoring Our Lady.

After mass, in the church square, people share sandwiches of “carne de vinha d’alhos” (pork in wine and garlic), homemade liquors, songs and joy of the Christmas spirit. This is surely one of the best ways to get to know Madeirans’ Christmas spirit.

Chants of the Epiphany

On the 5th of January, at 7 pm, hymns of the Epiphany are sung at Praça do Povo, in a concert open to the public which revives this Madeiran tradition. The Arrival of the Three Kings is celebrated on the 6th of January, and tradition has it that it be celebrated with the famous Bolo-Rei (Three King’s Cake), which contains a broad bean and a small gift inside. According to tradition, whoever is lucky enough to receive the slice which contains the broad bean, will have to buy the cake the following year, and whoever gets the gift will have to buy the drinks, thus keeping to tradition year after year.

Ethnographic Village

Largo da Restauração This Ethnographic Village presents live examples of local traditions, crafts, food, folklore and two traditional nativity scenes, promoting the tangible and intangible culture of Madeira.

There are two types of traditional nativity scenes: the traditional~Madeiran one located outside, which represents the human and natural landscape with vegetation, terraces, valleys, ravines, little houses and haystacks; and the tiered one, with its characteristic elements such as the Child Jesus, bows, fruit, grains and bread, amongst others.

You can also order the typical wheat soup and bolo do caco bread, sold only for take away.
