The Cultural Association MaratonàDescoberta is promoting, in June, the event “Traditional Madeiran Canoes: The Historic Crossing”, a unique initiative that pays tribute to the maritime tradition and nautical heritage of Madeira and Porto Santo.
The highlight of the event will be the recreation of the historic sea crossing between Porto Santo and Funchal in a traditional canoe. Covering approximately 74 km and expected to take around 10 hours, the journey will be undertaken by canoeists Carlos Lima and Miguel Figueira, with support from Filipe Nascimento and Cristiano Perestrelo.
More than a sporting challenge, this initiative celebrates the courage and knowledge of the island’s seafaring communities, while showcasing a cultural heritage that has played a defining role in shaping Madeiran identity.
