
From 10th to 12th October, the Madeira Islands hosts the 1st edition of Madeira Whale Fest, an event dedicated to the regions unique cultural and ecological cetacean heritage. Incorporated in the Nature Festival, this event reinforces Madeira’s ongoing engagement in environmentally friendly ecotourism and the preservation of cetaceans.
Sponsored by various local organisations, the festival combines science, art and culture through three main events:

10am | Marina of Funchal
Official opening of the festival | Exhibition of photographs of cetaceans
6pm – 11pm | Casa Velha do Palheiro (Funchal)
Ocean movie night - October 11th
9am – 1pm | Quinta do Lorde Marina (Caniçal)
Introduction to diving and awareness raising about plastic pollution
10am – 5pm | Funchal Marina (Funchal)
Activities: ‘watch for a day’ and ‘identify cetacean species’, Blue Safari Madeira/MARE Youth Ambassador - October 12th
3pm-9pm | Whale Museum Garden (Caniçal)
Whale Festival
Madeira Island is regarded as one of the world’s most respected whale-watching destinations and is the habitat of 29 of the 38 species of cetacean sighted in the North Atlantic.
This festival aims to celebrate this biodiversity, emphasising the crucial importance of Cetaceans in the overall ecosystem of our oceans while promoting sustainable tourism practises.
